Al-Karnak International Hospital
Location Luxor, EgyptFootprint - m2 RenovationDate Completed in 2021Number of beds 166

A key focus of the renovation was enhancing the hospital’s connection to its surroundings. New openings were introduced in the façade, allowing natural light to flood the interiors and providing breathtaking Nile views that contribute to a soothing and therapeutic environment for patients. While preserving much of the original structure, the redesign carefully balanced modernization with architectural continuity.

The hospital’s exterior spaces were also reimagined to create an inviting atmosphere. The landscape was redesigned and strategically illuminated to enhance the building’s presence at night, making it both welcoming for visitors and a landmark for Luxor’s growing medical tourism sector.

Through a thoughtful and patient-centered approach, Al-Karnak International Hospital now stands as a model of healthcare excellence, seamlessly integrating world-class medical services with the cultural and natural beauty of its surroundings.

At the core of the design is a spacious central courtyard that extends throughout the building, fostering natural ventilation and a serene healing environment. Additionally, smaller atriums are strategically placed in each wing, ensuring access to daylight and green spaces from various points within the hospital.

The facility is tailored to accommodate a range of specialized medical functions, including Renal Dialysis, Endoscopy, and Radiology. Recovery areas are designed to provide patients with comfortable spaces for post-surgical recuperation, enhancing the overall healthcare experience.

Emphasizing the principles of healthy architecture, the design integrates nature and green spaces into the hospital’s layout. Natural light is maximized wherever possible, while outdoor communal areas offer moments of respite for both patients and staff. In response to Egypt’s hot climate, perforated screens are incorporated to filter direct sunlight, ensuring a comfortable indoor environment while maintaining a strong visual and physical connection to nature.
